Teenage Pickleball Phenom
14-year-old Kelly Goodnow is taking the professional pickleball circuit by storm.

Pickleball is no longer just a backyard hobby or a retirement pastime; it is a full-blown athletic movement. With the sport’s participation numbers soaring—expected to approach 28 to 29 million players in the US by the end of 2026—the demographics are shifting dramatically. The average age of a player has dropped to 35, and youth participation is fueling the sport’s explosive next chapter. Right at the epicenter of this youth revolution is Phoenix’s own Kelly Goodnow, a 14-year-old prodigy who is taking the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour by storm.

We are incredibly proud to watch Kelly’s journey unfold. As a player who trains and competes on our local courts, her story perfectly encapsulates the future of the sport and the level of elite talent brewing right here at Center Court Pickleball Club.

From Tennis Roots to Pickleball Royalty

Kelly Goodnow’s ascension to the professional ranks is a testament to elite cross-sport athleticism. She has had a racket in her hand almost her entire life, beginning her tennis training at just four years old. Additionally, she is an avid golfer who carries a highly impressive 6 handicap.

Interestingly, Kelly’s introduction to pickleball wasn’t love at first sight. Like many dedicated tennis players, she initially resisted the transition.

“I hated pickleball at first. I was annoyed that they were taking over the tennis courts, but then when I first played, I thought, ‘Oh shoot, this is actually fun!'”

That realization sparked a meteoric rise that is practically unheard of in modern sports. She brought her aggressive tennis footwork and powerful baseline drives to the pickleball court, utilizing her foundational skills to quickly adapt to the game. As she refined her softer touch around the non-volley zone (the kitchen), she transformed into a highly disruptive force.

Transitioning her tennis mechanics, Kelly quickly developed devastating baseline drives and exceptional court coverage.

Dominating the Junior World Championships

Before testing the waters of the professional circuit, Kelly established absolute dominance in the junior ranks. She finished the 2025 season as the world’s No. 1-ranked junior in the 14U singles division. Her junior career is highlighted by her status as a two-time PPA Junior World Champion, having captured titles in both the 14U singles and 14U doubles formats.

Her phenomenal record made her one of the most recognizable faces of the sport’s youth movement, leading to a featured cover story on Junior Spin magazine in February 2026. In her junior days, she wasn’t just beating her peers; she was routinely qualifying for professional main draws, securing gold medals in elite 5.0-rated events across singles, mixed, and women’s doubles, and even defeating signed adult professionals.

Entering the PPA Tour at Age 13

The leap from junior phenom to touring professional is a massive hurdle, but Kelly cleared it with room to spare. In early 2026, at just 13 years old, she officially signed a contract with the PPA Tour, becoming one of the youngest signed professionals in the history of the sport.

Within her very first month as a professional, she surged into the global Top 100. A standout performance at the Newport PPA Challenger, where she reached the singles semifinals, catapulted her to World No. 88 on the PPA Tour. Her aggressive, baseline-heavy style and undeniable athleticism prompted PPA commentator and professional player Lea Jansen to compare Kelly’s singles game to that of Canadian tennis star Genie Bouchard.

Despite facing women in their twenties and older, Kelly’s mental composure is a distinct advantage. Her coach, Ashlee Candelaria, summed up her potential perfectly:

“Kelly is a rare talent, and what’s scary is she isn’t even scratching the surface of what she can do.” — Ashlee Candelaria, Coach
Competing on the professional circuit
Now signed with the PPA Tour, Kelly frequently faces off against established adult professionals.
